   Ex-Offender Cover Letter

I would like to apply for the position of Library Assistant at XYZ Library. I received my Master's in Library Science in 2015, and I have a B.A. in English Literature from 2012. After years of education, internships, and volunteering, I hope to achieve my dream of spending my life among books and helping draw others to the magic found within their pages.

While I know that an intense love of books is to be expected, I also have years of organization and administrative experience as well. During my undergraduate years, I worked as the administrative assistant to the CEO of Ferret, a music licensing company. This work required me to be quick, efficient, and polite, as I had to organize and sync the calendars of four people while scheduling meetings for an office of thirty individuals.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that I have a criminal record. I was convicted of vehicular theft when I was eighteen and served six months in prison from April to October of 2009. I deeply regret the incident and the choices that I made that night, but I learned much healthier behavior and community skills because of it. Time in prison allowed me to rediscover my love of books and set me on my path to achieving my dream. I also started volunteering in the library; recommending books to other inmates; and organizing speakers, donation parties, and read-ins. It was rewarding, engaging work that helped me become the efficient and positive person I am today.

I appreciate your continued consideration. I will contact your office next week to see if there is a time we can meet and discuss the position. Thank you for your time.
